  • Personality traits of Constitutional remedies

are there any books that describe the details of the personalities (types) of constitutional remedies? There's one called Personality of the major constitutional remedies but if any others had more, or the lesser ones it would be great. Thanks in advance.

I think Philip Bailey's Homeopathic Psychology is a good start. It contains about 24 constitutional profiles. Catherine Coulter also has a three volume work out that covers a number of constitutions, but don't know how many. But it is three books.

Another book that is interesting is Luc DeSchepper's What About Men? which explains the male homeopathic constitutions and puts then into the context of the five elements of accupuncture.

      Dear Curewisher

medical substances did not create personalities during their provings, therefore have no personality. So they cannot be prescribed on typology, classes of personalities.
      Personality is not disease.

Immagine they actually could remove personality ?? All you elf-esteam, your hard won ego -- all would be gone.

anyway -- if you wish for cures, you may as well use remedies according to their health-altering capacities recorded in the MMP.

No, but some constitutions have tendencies for certain issues. The nat m. type can have problems with men, for example. Ignatia can be the type to always get her heart broken. It isn't saying exactly what your personality is but more like the parameters of your personality. Or, to put it another way the profiles can explain the areas of concern. Phsophorus can become a loner because they can feel other people's emotions. They hide away to avoid all the suffering of other people.

It doesn't really tell you someone else's personality but explains specfic areas that may cause some problems for a particular constitution.

But on this subject, one of the great things about studying homeopathy is how you can see patterns throughout the whole profile. I am a sepia. One pattern running through sepia is about being grounded: grounded in her body, grounded in reality, grounded in common sense, and grounded also means intuition. I would never have seen myself in this light if it were not for homeopathy. But that is a strong pattern running through the sepia personality. But not the only one.

Indifference is another pattern. I can be indifferent to people, indifferent to children or mothering, indifferent to sex, indifferent to other people's opinion, etc. And this is how you see WHERE the personality goes off into some unhealthy area. I also think my indifference can make me an objective decision maker. My indifference can be unhealthy or it can be an asset. But homeopathy does give you a map in which to see what areas of your personality are likely to be sources of problems. I can see from the profile how this indifference is an asset and in what areas of my life it can become an unhealthy state.

There are paterns like this in other constitutions, I think. So, it is not just about specific aspects of the personality but the overall view of how these aspects seem to be related to each other by this pattern.

The Materia Medica (at least some I'm trying to decide which to get) have a preliminary description before where it gets into individual parts of the mind, body, generalities, that give some details that could for many remedies be considered 'personality'. I guess also while some 'personality' is inherent and not part of illness, other aspects could be pathological.. Like it seems to me that *too much* shyness as for say Nat Carb, or too much aggression (eg Stramonium), or too much more or less sociopathy (eg Platinum)--could be themselves signs of unhealthiness not just to be dismissed as "oh, that's just John Doe, he was born that way". Not everyone is born healthy in either body or mind, and that could apply to personality too.

We were discussing Jacob, and I noticed that at one point he wrote (prob in things he then editted out???) that he had been prescribed Sulphur by a homeopath and immediately on taking it he had the feeling that it was a special thing meant specially just for him and no one else in the world and that for just a moment he had had a sense of (?) something like seeing into the essential nature of the universe or some such -- since it disappeared, I cannot recall the details. But it was a weird thing. I thought if he had reported it to his homeopath it might have been considered a proving or aggravation symptom, not necessarily a positive result even though his experience of the wondrous almost religiously ecstatic moment he believed it to be, is presumably a lot more pleasant than the sort of aggravation or proving that might manifest as a migraine headache or some such. That kind of aspect of Sulphur is right in the description of it I have in my Boericke. People who think they are superior etc.

              Dear Teagan
Funny you posted on the subject of Sulp. constitution. My 13 yrs. of marriage to a classic sulp. has firsthand insight on the ups and downs/good and bad traits of this remedy. And yes a well indicated remedy will balance all of the rough stuff to say it simply. My husband has been a verry balanced sulp. due to my prescriptions when he gets a bit off kilter. He asks for a booster of sulp. I have also interactions with sulp. constitutions that are way off Balance (not on homeopathy) they are still the same ecentric, wise, egotistical, messy sul. but completely out of wack, with loads of ailments, habits of drinking/drug abuse, compulsive women chasers, mental and emotional roller coasters...........If they only had a dose of sulp............ So the remedy does not change the CORE of the essence of the soul just an balance of energy physical and mental.

This applies to all the constitutional remedies............. not just sulp.

                part two;
by the way the MM does not go into details regards essence, constitutional traits, not deep enough only a skim of the mind symptoms then the physicals. You need different books like the ones that have been listed.

                Hope this helps

To find the personality profiles of both major and minor homeopathic remedies would cost you a lot of money. You would need to be one an extensive materia medica that is published in multiple volumes. That is the only way I think you can come up with that level of detail for the personality profiles of minor remedies.

I am under the impression that George Vithoulakas is working on this type of series which is adding volumes as they are published, so it may be a work that is not finished yet. It would be like buying a set of encyclopedias, costing serveral hundred dollars. But it would be an extensive and detailed materia medica published in many volumes.

Vithoulkas's MM is up to volume 8. But it is not finished yet.

This is volume 8: from Carduus Marianus to Cicuta Virosa.

                          http://www.homeopathic.com/Merchant2..._Code=VIT-MAT8

You would have to invest in a work like this, I think.

Seems to me that there are "schools" of thought even as within what would all be considered "classical" homeopathy. Part of which is coming out in this thread. Such as the degree to which the mentals and emotionals are looked at compared to localized symptoms. Whether or not the plant, animal, mineral etc. nature of the remedy is considered and so on, also relevant in this.

Like you I'm somewhat frustrated by having to make long distance decisions about what book(s) to get. Cannot go to local bookstore and thumb through a dozen or more possibles and choose.

i have found some help from things like interviews with certain authors to try to get a sense of them (ofr example Minimum has Sankaran, Vermuelen and others, and then I found some articles in something called, I think, the New England Journal of Homeopathy), or where possible on line experts or hints as to arrangement of the book, comprehensiveness etc. Sankaran tends to take the approach that the mental and emotional picture is key to finding the right remedy fit--so that might mean his book(s) would fit what you are looking for better than some others (at least more than someone who believes that the physicals are all that is important)--I was thinking to get the one that is considered an MM, rather than the ones separately geared to things like Plant Kingdom. I can't find anything so far to get a help in this way on Coulter--and it looks like there are now 4 Coulter volumes so unless they are arranged in a way that happens to fit much of what you are looking for into one volume, you are again looking at a good bit of money.

But in fact, I also found at least some of the Materia Medica Pura online and so far that is actually my favorite... (!!!) It doesn't give exactly what you are looking for in this post, but it might help you out in trying to find what you are really looking for, namely an answer to whatever is the problem????. Reversed repertories also help.

If you cannot name what remedies you are interested in, maybe you could say what "personality" types you are wanting to find, and then maybe people could suggest from there remedies that might perhaps fit those types and from there what books or what volumes of what series would cover them?

Or, if you had a book that gave teh main polychrest remedies and their personality features, maybe you could then see what is at least similar and then look at the smaller remedies that are similar to that polychrest?

I think some things are 'personality' like and came out in provings, but most likely others have come about bec. homeopaths had the experience that a certain type responds better or less well to a certain remedy. Sort of like noticing that someone treated by Belladonna in a family did not come down with Scarlet Fever, say. And sometimes this may be very valid, and I suppose sometimes not so much so...

My homeopath vet has a computerized search system which he enters things into as the client talks. But then in his own mind he seems to have the picture profile of what type of animal the remedies that come up would be most appropriate for and starts asking about that sort of as confirmatory signs.

Finally, it might actually be possible to call a place that sells homeopathy books and ask if someone could read you the table of contents of what you are choosing between.

You have a good point hans_w. I guess what they mean is the provings created mental states, not really personality traits as one can have a different personality than the other and still come to the same deranged mental state, can't they? So I wonder how they can surely say a remedy is this and that personality then - probably by the mental states, they could still guess.. I don't know. Or maybe there was a proving/aggravation of a remedy that made a person want to be extra tidy etc so that actually is a personality, pretty confusing.

That's what I thought. That's why I wanted to know if there were any books that had the description of the remedy constitution to the person. I didn't want only the 'major' constitutional old remedies but other old constitutional remedies as well. I just wonder how other homeopaths know the others as well, there must be a book right?
I thought it would be interesting even if it was not all in one book but somewhat separate to have what I want as a whole. Of course it would be best if it was together. They must sell some book like that, don't they? for example the major remedies you can also find online pretty much but not the 'others', and I recall seeing silicea has low stamina and it described some of the mental states/personality.
If any homeopaths can reference a book like I mentioned it would be great cause if homeopaths don't know where that information is, then who will?

                            Thanx for the responses every1.

                              Dear Members

Hahnemann gives the following advise regards the content of a Materia medica suitable for the homeopathic use:
                              § 144
From such a materia medica everything that is conjectural, all that is mere assertion or imaginary should be strictly excluded; everything should be the pure language of nature carefully and honestly interrogated.
In this light, most of the modern books sold as Materia medicas would not qualify.

Every one is welcome to read and make use of Hahnemann’s own MMP and those Ones he recommends in the Ogranon: (153, 5th and 6th ed.)

1 Dr. von Bonninghausen, who has already distinguished himself by his labours in connection with the new system of medicine, has lately increased our obligation to him by the publication of his important little book setting forth the characteristic symptoms, more particularly of the antipsoric medicines, entitled Uebersicht der Hauptwirkungs-Sphure der antips. Arz., Munster, bei Coppenrath, 1833, and the appendix thereto (containing the antisyphilitic and the antisycotic medicines) at the end of the second edition of his Systematisch-alphabetisches Repertorium der antipsorischen Arzneien, bei Coppenrath in Munster.
1 Dr. von Bonninghausen, by the publication of the characteristic symptoms of homoeopathic medicines and his repertory has rendered a great service to Homoeopathy as well as Dr. J.H.G. Jahr in his handbook of principal symptoms.
One will soon realize, that constitution of the patient does not form part of the proving or the disease. Likewise it becomes evident, that mental pictures, drug-personalities etc. were not created by remedies during a proving in the test-person but are merely assumptions of certain authors writing books about homeopathy.

Everyone is welcome to conduct a proving on himself – it is worthwhile to experience directly what the remedy does.
