              What is vitamin E?


              The family of vitamin E includes eight substances, the best known is alpha-tocopherol. One of the main functions of vitamin E is its antioxidant quality, helping to neutralize free radicals in the body. Thus, it helps to protect cells (especially the cell membrane) and has a particular role in protecting vessels. It also acts as an anti-coagulant.


              Prevention of cardiovascular diseases, cancers and diseases related to aging


              Numerous studies have been conducted on this vitamin, suggesting it may have an important role in the prevention or treatment of many diseases (venous, arterial, certain cancers, Alzheimer's disease (early stage), a disease of the retina (macular degeneration associated with age), cataract ...). Thus, vitamin E is sometimes used in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Some doctors prescribe vitamin E supplements in case of cardiovascular problems, such as too high levels of cholesterol. But studies have proved contradictory on the effectiveness of this vitamin on vascular disease and some other diseases.


              Recommended intake


              The daily recommended intake of vitamin E for adults is about 12 mg, and a little less for children. A large study conducted in 1988 (SU.VI.MAX) showed that on average, we have inadequate intakes of vitamin E, even if significant deficiencies are rare in industrialized countries. Risks of deficiency primarily concern people with chronic diseases of the intestine limiting, problematic absorption of fat, or conditions caused by medications that reduce fat absorption.


              Where is vitamin E contained?


              The need and suply of natural vitamin E can be satisfied by several types of food:


              - Vegetable oils (wheat germ, sunflower ...), margarine,
              - Walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, wheat germ, dried apricot,
              - Cod Liver Oil, crab, tuna in oil,
              - Leafy green vegetables (cabbage, spinach, lamb ...).

              Recommendstions


              - Due to its antioxidant properties, vitamin E is found in many dietary supplements and recommended, adviced (rarely) by doctors.
              - If you decide to take supplements of vitamin E, do it for a limited period (3-4 weeks).
              - If you are performing anticoagulant therapy, do not take vitamin E supplement without first consulting your doctor.
              - If you are pregnant, do not take vitamin E without medical advice.
