What
is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is an
effective and well proven form of medicine which has been used for 200
years. It was discovered in 1796 by a German physician and chemist, Dr
Samuel Hahnemann. He called his new system of treatment Homeopathy, a
word derived from the Greek which means "similar suffering".
This scientific system
of medicine is based on the discovery that a substance which in a large
dose can produce symptoms of illness in a healthy person will - if given
in a minute dose to a sick person showing the same symptoms - bring
about healing.
For example, if you
drink too much coffee you can have periods of sleeplessness,
palpitations or nervousness. Conventional medicine would treat these
symptoms by giving a drug to suppress them and bring on artificial
sleep. Some of these drugs may cause side effects.
Homeopathy might use a
substance such as the homeopathic remedy "Coffea" which is a
minute dose of coffee prepared in a special way, and which matches your
symptoms. The remedy will relieve your symptoms and induce natural
sleep. Therefore "like may be cured by like".
How
does Homeopathy work?
Homeopathy recognises
that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of an imbalance and
disturbance within the person. Homeopathy treats the whole person and
not just the disease. We are individuals, and in ill health we react and
produce different symptoms, whether mental, emotional or physical, which
show our own disturbance.
The body has a strong
ability to return to good health, and homeopathic remedies work by
stimulating and assisting the body's own healing power. As a result of
good homeopathic treatment, the general well being of the person can be
improved and the symptoms of ill health will be relieved.
What
are Homeopathic Remedies?
The remedies are made
from natural plant, mineral and animal extracts which have been used for
hundreds of years in healing. They are prepared by a special process of
dilution in a solution of alcohol and water and then shaken to potentise
them. Thereby the healing effect is increased and unwanted side effects
are lost.
You cannot become
addicted to homeopathic remedies.
What
will treatment be like?
The first consultation
will last about one and a half hours, and a homeopath will try to get a
thorough understanding of your complaints and how you experience them.
He or she will also enquire into your energy level and your past medical
history.
Anything you say will
be treated in the strictest confidence.
Usually, a homeopathic
remedy is prescribed following this consultation. The remedy may be
given in the form of a tablet or tablets, which should be dissolved on
or under your tongue. Sometimes a liquid remedy may be given with
specific instructions.
You will be asked not
to put anything in your mouth for 15-20 minutes before and after taking
the remedy. A homeopath will usually ask you to avoid coffee, and
substances containing strong peppermint, menthol, eucalyptus and
camphor, as these may interfere with the action of the homeopathic
remedy.
Other medicines
prescribed by your doctor and certain treatments may interfere with your
homeopathic treatment. So please mention to your homeopath if you take
anything else.
What
happens next?
Follow up consultations
last about ½ to ¾ hour and the number of visits required may depend on
the severity of your complaint. After taking the remedy you may notice
some changes in your mental and physical well being. Please take note of
these and discuss them with your homeopath at the next appointment.
What
conditions can Homeopathy treat?
Homeopathy can treat
all kinds of illnesses. Examples include stress, anxiety, depression,
insomnia, chronic tiredness, digestive disorders, skin conditions,
arthritis and menstrual and menopausal problems, to name but a few. As a
qualified professional homeopath I will select a remedy to suit your
particular condition and characteristics as an individual.
About
Myself
For many years I taught
as a secondary school teacher. Having been interested in and impressed
by the success of homeopathic treatment in my own family, I studied
homeopathy professionally for 4 years. I qualified with a
Licentitateship at the London College of Classical Homœopathy and
subsequently achieved Registration with the Society of Homeopaths. I
have an interest in nutrition and its benefits for general good health,
and also prescribe flower essence remedies when appropriate.
I do not give
consultations or treat patients over the Internet - a personal
consultation is an essential part of homeopathic treatment.
