| Homeopathy @ Work Homeopathy @ Work homeopathic remedy finder is intended to
assist health care professionals by pinpointing top remedies that match the patient
picture. The Release 2.0 can perform constitutional analysis using Kent's Mind Symptoms
and Generalities. For acute analysis, it uses an alphabetized and categorized version of
Boericke Materia Medica that was developed by Shashi Phatak.
Developed as a tool to help in real time case
taking, as opposed to back-end research, the software presents progressively smaller lists
of symptoms, generalities, modalities and characteristics to choose from. To allow for
this type of structured approach, the database size is kept modest - only 120 of the most
commonly used remedies are considered. An expert system like algorithm uses
"weights" to grade likely remedies. Patient information can be saved and a
personalized report can be generated.
The software requires 486 or higher PC running
MicroSoft Windows 3.1 or later with 8MB RAM (It would run very slowly with 4MB RAM) and 16
MB free disk space.
Homeopathy @ Home, the home version of the
software, includes the modified Boericke database and can perform acute analysis. It is
limited in the number of profiles that can be saved.
An Independent Review

Homeopathy at Home by

There is a newcomer on the computer market for
homeopathy. Unlike MacRepertory or RADAR, this program is specifically designed for
families that want to use homeopathy to treat acute illnesses at home. It requires a 386
DX IBM compatible computer with 4 MB or more of RAM, EGA or higher graphics and a mouse.
This program is easy to install into Windows, on
a 386 it takes about 20-25 minutes to load. Starting the program off of Windows only
requires a few mouse clicks to open to the initial screen. You have two choices upon
opening the program, either you can proceed by category analysis or by the ailment
depending on the case that you perceive.
There is a set up screen for 8 patients (family
members) that can be loaded with key background data (chilly, hot, craves sweets, etc.)
that is constant and chronic for each of the family members. Then when you need to work on
a family member you just have to load in the acute symptoms.
If a person can operate a VCR, they could operate
this program. The screen commands appear as < (backwards), > (forward to the next
screen), Cancel, Clear and Glossary. With the mouse you scroll down the list of categories
(there are 32) which include topics like ears and hearing, fever, hands and feet, stomach,
etc. You mouse click the select button for symptoms in that category. This information is
correlated with the chronic or stable information on that particular patient that has
already been loaded into the program. The computer sorts through all the given information
to provide the remedy and potency selection options. If a patient runs across a medical or
homeopathic term they do not understand, they can use the Glossary button for an
explanation.
After you select your symptoms to be considered,
the next screen allows you to edit them. This allows you to confirm your choices and
"clean up" your case taking. The next screen is for Modalities which you select
for the program to consider in the remedy selection.
Once you have the information loaded into the
program, the Remedies screen comes up which gives the top 3 choices with a graphic
representation for the relative value of each of the remedy in this case. Below the
graphic is the list of the symptoms that determined the remedy selection, this allows the
patient to review which symptoms need to be addressed most clearly and what remedy picture
most accurately reflects the overall condition of the patient.
There is another screen to report on the
remedies, and will offer potency and frequency suggestions. Any where along the process
you can have a report printed out.
The patient can open the case by Ailment (instead
of category). There are nearly 100 ailments listed, such as acne, asthma, ulcer, etc.
Otherwise the selection process follows the same, simple system. Overall, the Homeopathy
at Home program has nice graphics, is simple to operate, has some nice detail for a
patient oriented program and is quite flexible so it will work in nearly all cases.
This program will fill a necessary gap in acute
home care, vital for the busy practitioner that wants his patients to screen their
problems before contacting him. We all have experienced the annoyance of parents
(especially the ones new to homeopathy) calling and taking up our time to deal with an
acute condition, something they can take care of at home, if they have some help. Well,
help has arrived, and it is called Homeopathy at Home. It is available from
